Pichilín

pichilin2.1Pichilín is a community of small farmers who chiefly cultivate maize, yuca, and tobacco. A paramilitary attack in 1996 left 12 people dead, and forced the rest of the community from their homes. This was the first massacre in Montes de María. Residents were shocked. Community members soon returned, due to the need to cultivate their land, but were again displaced in 2004. Today, most families have again returned. However, the community receives little attention and support from state and government institutions in rebuilding the community, and few families have been registered as victims of forced displacement with the institutions through which they can demand their rights as victims of armed conflict. Still, residents of Pichilín lack basic services such as water and sanitation. However, the community has formed a Community Action Board and is working with Sembrandopaz to develop community leadership and political organization in order to demand their rights.
